As I read Carolyn Wilhelm’s lesson plan, numerous things came to mind. Firstly, I noticed the thought she put in to create her clear, well-structured lessons. In a series of four consecutive sessions, Ms. Wilhelm’s manages to portray the meaning of Found Poetry in a clear, systematic way. Her lessons are aligned with the five components of ELA standards; reading, writing, speaking/listening and language. Ms. Wilhelm begins her lesson with reading a favorite book aloud to her students. She then encourages them to share their thoughts on the book. After reading the book, she delivers to her students a Found Poem related to the story, refraining from using the term “Found Poetry”. She invites her students to share their comments on the poem, while she leads them to discover the similarities between the book and the poem.
