Overall the child appears to be a strong reader. His decoding is good, yet he occasionally repeats some phrases until he gets it right. He scores 94% in accuracy, with minimal teacher intervention. With a self-correction rate of 1:5, we can resolve that the student does not self-monitor as often as he should, only stopping to correct 1 out of every 5 errors. He comprehends the passage very well by recalling all the details. He is capable of comparing and contrasting the differences and similarities between whales and fish.

It would be beneficial for the child to read more books to increase his fluency. He also loses focus a few times in middle of reading and needs to be guided back to the right place. Most of his errors are visual or structural and therefore, he can gain a lot by reviewing basic phonics rules to avoid repeating the same mistakes in the future.

  3. I think practice is the key to increase a child's fluency! When I notice a student struggling with her reading fluency, I give her books to take home. The extra practice has proven to work wonders, in addition to the fact that she develops a love for reading. When she brings back the book I ask her a quick question to verify if she comprehended what she read. Also, when I read aloud to my students I model fluent reading with expression and have them match my voice. It also works well to improve fluency!
