ELA Reflection
The
key ELA standards are designed to prepare all students for success. The
instructional videos I viewed brought out the importance of understanding the five
Language Arts components: reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language. As
an English Language instructor, it is crucial to stay aligned with the Common
Core methods, which are key factors in helping our students become productive
American citizens. Teaching a language is a slow and steady process, but when
done correctly, the students can master it effectively
Reading
is the first key feature. The reading process is a developmental process, where
children are learning decoding, phonics and basic reading skills. Students
should learn to make connections and inferences from text. On a personal note,
when I discuss a book with my students I always ask them to make connections to
their personal experiences. I also encourage them to read between the lines and
figure out what is not directly said. The ultimate goal of reading is comprehension.
Teaching young children how to read helps them master their language skills.
Reading
works hand-in-hand with writing. Writing is an essential tool used for
students to express themselves, and for the teacher to measure their level of understanding.
Students reflect on what they’ve read through writing, such as, informative and
explanatory texts, narratives and research papers. Helping students develop their
writing skills at a young age teaches them how to communicate effectively.
Speaking
and listening is another important component of Language Arts. Teachers
should encourage students to engage in dialogues so they can develop their
language skills. In addition, working in partners help students express
themselves and listen carefully to the ideas of their peers.
The last feature of ELA is language
development. There are some basic rules of standard written and spoken
English. Yet, a teacher should aim to enhance her student’s vocabulary, using
the many different tools and techniques.
Using
ELA standards when teaching Language Arts will help me navigate my lessons
properly in a way in which my students can grasp the information in the best
possible manner. Implementing technology will definitely make learning more
meaningful and fun.
